I must admit, I am a comics shop snob. Sure, I used to be happy walking into any shop selling comics, even if it was musty, comics stacked haphazardly to the ceiling, shop owner ignoring the clientelle so he could watch the "Director's Cut" of Gojira ("Don't call it Godzilla!")-- but not any more.
Now that I have kids, I can NOT STAND these crummy shops, who do more to scare the uninitiated away from graphic novels and GN's than enlighten them to the awesomeness that is comics! Lighting so you can see in front of you! Friendly faces greeting you as you walk in! A friendly looking store, with signage that does more than test the heterosexuality of the visitors, as well as their tolerance for pics of swords going through zombie skulls above the all-ages section.
Well, Art & Franco, the creators behind Tiny Titans and the new Suprman Family adventures, have teamed with their buddy Marc Hammond, to create a shop for everyone, and heavily dependent upon creating the NEXT generation of comics readers.
I am rooting for these guys-- I guess I have since meeting them at the Delaware ACME con in 1998, just before my first issue of Buzzboy came out. Their self-puvblished "Patrick the Wolfboy" is a favorite, and their enthusiasm knows no bounds. I hope to interview them soon on this inspired (and somewhat crazy) move into retailing.
If you are in the Chicago, IL area, please stop by and tell 'em Buzzboy sent you!
